How to Organize Your Closet for Styling Success

Let's start off by saying that I realize that my closet is probably different than other people's closets, so this may just serve as an example about how I do this, but it could also serve as inspiration to others if they find it helpful!

Despite loving clothes and styling outfits, sometimes I really do struggle to find that perfect look for the day.  My solution to this has been trying to organize my wardrobe for styling success.  My closet is broken down into two sections for hanging clothes, two shelves on top, and I also have a dresser with six drawers.  I keep all of my shoes in a separate place from the closet, so that won't be included in this.

Anything that needs to be hung, for example dresses or shirts that would otherwise wrinkle or have special detailing on them, skirts or layering pieces, get hung up in the closet.  I also keep all of my hats and small purses here.  I have found that the easiest way to style an outfit for the day has been to organize things by the type of clothing that it is, for example all the dresses are together, shirts are together, and so on.  I keep all my dresses and shirts on one half of the closet, and my layering pieces and bottoms on the other.  I then group all the colors of the category together, so that if I'm looking for a  dark colored dress or a certain color layering piece it's easy to find.  Then I put all of my hats and medium/ small bags up top on one half, and my sweaters folded on top on the other side.

Over in the dresser drawers I try to organize again by clothing type.  I keep cute tops in the first drawer, camisoles and plain tops in the second drawer, and jeans, pants, and leggings in the bottom drawer.  The other side is kept for less interesting, staple pieces (i.e. underwear, socks and PJ's).  Because I have so many clothes, and they are all so different, keeping things organized like this makes it a lot easier when trying to style together an outfit for the day.

I realize that this may already be how lots of people organize their closets, but I thought it might be helpful for some.  For a while I had tried to mix things together and organize primarily by color, but I find it a bit less functional.  Another thing that I'd recommend is keeping your closet clean and making it easier to look at.  It might seem a little silly, but I think it makes it easier to style when all the sweaters are folded together and all the belts are hung on the same little s hook, so all the options are right there in front of me to see. Another note for this is trying to make your closet have all the same hangers.  It's one less distracting thing going on in there.  I love wood hangers, so I got a bunch of the same color/style hangers and it makes the whole closet feel more streamlined (There are some random hangers in this picture, I need to get a few more of my wood ones!)

Take it or leave it, that's how I organize my closet.  It helps me find things in the morning, and makes it a little bit less stressful trying to find what I need.  When I do laundry I'm always sure to organize it like this so that it doesn't get to chaotic, and when new seasons hit, I am able to sort through and cycle things in and out.

Happy organizing!
