I am the Lorax, and I Speak for the Trees

Hello friends!

One of my all time favorite Dr. Suess stories is that of The Lorax, which I recently rewatched on Disney+. Then I got to thinking, how I could shoot an interpretation of this story for the blog!   So here you have it: some 5 ft tall truffula trees I constructed from pom poms and pvc pipe, and a girl version of the Lorax herself!

A Dip in the Lake and Donuts for Breakfast

Our week at the lake brought some much needed peace and quiet, and it is always a little freeing being forced to break away from technology for a spell.  Most of the time we were out of cell reception, allowing us to fully connect with the nature surrounding us and the present moment.

On the last day I was determined to shoot this little photo story, involving raking a bunch of muck out of the lake, hours blowing up and deflating the pool float, and precariously hanging off the end of the dock while my husband got that main shot — while standing on the other end of the rake!  And yes, I can swim, but the water was full of weeds all around those beautiful little lily pads, so I didn't want to have to fall in to get back!!

Five Mermaid-y things in my Vintage Treasure Trove

Screen shot from Disney's The Little Mermaid

When I set out to start my vintage shop on Etsy, it was and has been indeed a labor of love.  But it was also a means to continue collecting vintage goodies past my breaking point.  I LOVE collecting old things that have some sort of beautiful or interesting quality, but at some point I hit the limit on filling our home with knick knacks!  I've filled so many of the surfaces in our home to their 'healthy capacity' as I like to think of it, and yet I don't want to stop hunting for gorgeous old things!  So in a way, it was a way for me to scoop up all the cool little vintage things and just be able to help them get to their next home.

Picture Me In the Reeds

Like many others, I've been sinking in deep to the soothing vibes from Taylor Swift's new album, folklore.  I was pretty excited to order the special edition vinyl she released for the first week, and I can't wait until it finally ships out in November!!  Until then, I've been listening to the album on Spotify, and it is A MOOD.  I love it, and I can't help but love the experience of editing to it.  I'm always really passionate about what music sets the right tone while I'm editing shoots — listening to the right music helps solidify the vibe I'm trying to go for for a setting or outfit.  And this shoot is definitely synonymous with the song seven off her new album.

If you're feeling this little mind field trip with me, give that song a listen while you scroll through this week's fairytale photo story:

Thinking in Pictures

I'm not entirely sure when it originated, or if it's the way other people experience life, but I tend to view the world through a lens.  I process concepts visually, and am constantly going through life through a visual filter.  I see visual patterns in the world, and am always layering some mood into my current experience.

Shimmers of Sun

This month's loose theme is mermaids, so it makes sense that I would reflect that in this week's outfit post with a shimmery mermaid inspired set by the seashore.  This area where I shot for this week is one of my most favorite little stretches of rock and beach in my town, because it's covered with cascading blooms of so many different shades!  In almost every season this little patch of wonderful is a new swirl of beauty to drink in, and as of late it has been a whirlpool of pinks, yellows and creams — and I love it so!

Mermaids, Selkies and Sirens

A Mermaid c. 1900, John William Waterhouse

To kick off my new habit of having a loose theme to my blog each month, I thought I'd start with diving into the differences in some of the mythical sea folk.  And all of this is as much of a learning experience for me as well as whomever may be reading!  When I started this month's research I had no clue as to the difference between mermaids, selkies and sirens, and it turns out there are some reasons behind this, because the meanings behind the words have shifted over time!

So what is the difference between mermaids, selkies and sirens?

Let's dig in!

Come with me, and You'll be in a World of Pure Imagination

I have been so excited to shoot and share these photos for a little while now.  This mint Son De Flor dress is just  E v e r y t h i n g  and I'm so thankful to have been gifted it by my husband for my 30th back in June.  Son De Flor is an ethical company, which means that they pay their garment makers fair wages, and source their fabrics responsibly and sustainably.  And besides that, their dresses are clearly what fairytales are made of!!!
