For some time now I've seen the concept of minimalism and capsule wardrobes prevalently emerging in the fashion community. It's this idea that putting together an outfit gets that much easier when you only have 30 or so items in your closet that all already go together well. And the prospect of this is tempting, I'll agree. The ease of only having a few choices to choose from, and the simplicity of only needing to organize, clean and store those 30ish items is intriguing.
So I've settled on coming up with my own solution to this conundrum, and that is creating seasonal or monthly capsules. This way, I can benefit from the ease of only having roughly 30 items to choose from on a given day, but I can still keep that candy corn dress to don come October!
The first capsule I'll be making will be for May, but for now I thought I'd share how my framework for how I plan to set up my capsule wardrobes. The idea is that anything I own that's not in the capsule will be put into storage, donated or sold on Poshmark so that I can focus on loving these capsule items only.
In warm months, I plan to have approximately:
- 6 Tops
- 3 Layering Pieces
- 4 Dresses
- 5 Skirts
- 2 Pairs of Shorts
- 3 Purses
- 4 Pairs of Shoes
- 3 hair accessories
I'll also have a swimsuit, sunglasses, and I won't limit jewelry for my experiment.
And in cold months, I plan to have approximately:
- 2 sweaters
- 4 Tops
- 3 Layering Pieces
- 4 Dresses
- 5 Skirts
- 2 Pairs of Pants
- 3 Purses
- 4 Pairs of Shoes
- 3 hair accessories
I'll also have a coat, cold weather gear like hats and mittens, and I won't limit jewelry for my experiment.
I am looking forward to this little challenge/ project and I'm excited for how it will work out! Stay tuned for updates on my monthly capsules and how it is actually working out for me!
Until Next Time,
