Style Inspirations: Outlander / Potato Peel Pie Society / Little Women

Shopping for vintage more, and hoping to channel some vibes of decades past...

Lately (and if we're being honest, for always), I've been particularly inspired by period costuming in films.  I just adore the amount of detail that went into clothing going back in history.  Obviously in the 20th century things got quite a lot more comfortable concerning fashion, but gosh almighty, were the styles of old gorgeous works of art!

There have been a few films and tv shows in the last few years that have spoken to me in their costuming, and might just be influencing my wardrobe choices in the future!

Outlander  - 1946 / 1743  (Second World War Era United States / Scottish Highlands)

Outlander is a television show that follows the adventures of Claire Beauchamp Randall Fraser in her time travel journey between 1946 post war England and the years leading up to the battle of Culloden in 1745 in the Scottish Highlands.   In this series we see a great variation of period costume styles, from Claire's original clothes in the 1940s - 60s in England and the US, and fashions from Scottland and France back in the 1700s.  Love. Love. Love.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society - 1946  Second World War Era England

This Netflix film follows the journey of Juliet Ashton, an English writer in post war England as she visits the island of Guernsey learning about what the resident's lives were like during the German occupation of WWII.  Her dress is made up of simple button down shirts and smart jackets / hats fitting for the time.  I really love Juliet's wardrobe in this movie, as well as the way it is quite believable to be a person's wardrobe (she re-wears a few things throughout the film, and isn't in a clean brand new outfit in each new scene).  I can definitely pick up a few tips here as to how subtle little details can make an outfit unique.

Little Women - 1860s  Civil War Era New England

In the 2019 film Little Women, we follow the lives of the civil war era March family, and WOW, the costuming in this film is on point.  All of the women's clothing in this film are so well crafted and styled, from Meg's feminine styles, to Amy's polished and proper look, to Jo's rugged boyish styles.  It's hard to say whose costuming I love most, it is all so impeccable.  It makes me want to break out a sewing machine and try to make some of these period styles myself!

Until Next Time,
